Our History regarding Pediatric Cardiology

It has been over 15 years since the unexpected passing of my brother-in-law who, at the time, was only 15-years-old. Similar circumstances occurred in the early eighties to an older sister of theirs. Both were vibrant, full of potential, seemingly healthy children gone in the blink of an eye with no indications, leaving a family behind with so many questions and even more heartbreak. To try and help give the family some answers, The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Ontario, had asked for the donation of his heart for research purposes.

The Hospital for Sick Children was able to rule out all but four heart conditions, all having electrical components. Fast forward to 2010 when we, at that time parents of two with another on the way.  I had a very strong gut feeling that I needed to have my older two children double checked as it had been years since their last assessment after birth with a pediatric cardiologist. Results indicated that our second child has an arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat…an irregularity within the electrical of her heart).

As a parent, we want to ‘fix’ or kiss our child’s ‘booboo,’ but sometimes a kiss doesn’t take the pain or issue away, so I decided to be proactive and, as a coping mechanism, began the gala. Once connected with the Hospital for Sick Children’s Cardiology Department, who treated my children like children and not like a number, I decided to donate the gala’s proceeds to them. They are the reason why so many children have been given a chance to have a better, longer, healthier life.

Alzheimer’s – Cherish all the Memories

2006 was to be one of the best years of my life, I was graduating from University, beginning my career, getting married, buying a new home, and top it off found out we were expecting our first child.  Unfortunately, late in that year my Mother was diagnosed with very early stages of Alzheimer’s/Dementia.  Knowning that my Maternal Grandfather suffered and died from the same detrimental disease I knew I had to move on this as fast and deligently as possible to prolong and potentially deflect the deterioration for as long as possible.

My Mother was only 66 years old at that time, she was young, however, there is absolutely no escaping the reality and the inevitable of this disease.  A person looses themselves and they don’t even know it.  Their vessel is still in tact, for the most part, you would never know, as with most mental health issues, but their persona dissipates.

Going through the different stages with my Mother has been a very difficult journey as one of her primary caregivers, over looking all her medical affairs.  I almost worry more about my Father as he is slowly loosing his soulmate, his best friend, the woman he has been married to for over 60 years, the Mother of his children – a huge part of his world is deteriorating with her.  As he looses his wife, my siblings and I are losing our Mother, my children and my nephews their Nonna (Grandmother).

This disease currently is unstoppable and warrants a cure.  These individuals deserve a better opportunity to live out their remaining years and their families deserve a sense of hope.

2019 marks a year of reflection and redirection in our philanthropy – hence our two very worthy causes that are near and dear to not just myself, but many families out there.  Together we can make a difference!
